Shirley McIntyre

Funeral services for Shirley Ray (Smith) McIntyre, age 91, formerly of Sulphur Springs have been scheduled for Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 11:00am at First Baptist Church Spence Chapel in Sulphur Springs with Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. immediately preceding the service in Spence Chapel in First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in Sulphur Springs.


Shirley was born on a ranch in Sweetwater, Texas on September 1, 1919 to Ray Shook Smith and Gladys Thomas Smith. Her family moved to Sulphur Springs when she was 10 years old, and she spent her young adult years in Sulphur Springs, Texas where she met and married the love of her life, Charles Frederick McIntyre on August 27, 1939, a few days before her twentieth birthday. For the next eighteen years they lived in Sulphur Springs and Dallas, Texas. They moved from Sulphur Springs to Lubbock, Texas, in August of 1957. Shirley worked at the Lubbock County Tax Office for thirty years until she retired at age seventy-one. She passed away July 30, 2011 at the age of 91.

Shirley was an avid sports fan, and she and Charles attended all of her three sons sporting event and later her grandchildren's sporting activities. She was a proud supporter of Texas Tech athletics. Shirley was an excellent seamstress and great cook, as well as a knitter and quilt maker. She loved to china paint. Shirley was an active member of First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs and Lubbock, Texas and enjoyed attending her Sunday School class. She was a member and officer of the Eastern Star. Most of all, she loved her family. She lived for her family.

Shirley is survived by her brother John W. (Jim) Smith and wife Gloria of Ft. Worth and her three sons--John McIntyre and wife Margaret; Thomas McIntyre and wife Laurie; Dale McIntyre and wife Susan, as well as seven grandchildren-Mike McIntyre, Nick McIntyre, Tanner McIntyre, Kylie McIntyre, Corey McIntyre, Hayden McIntyre and Zachary McIntyre. Shirley has two nephews Stephen Smith and Michael Smith, a niece Kimberley Smith, a great nephew Aaron Smith and a great, great nephew, Christian Smith.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles McIntyre, and brother, William LaClair Smith.

Shirley was a dedicated, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a woman who lived her Christian faith every day. We will miss you, "Shirley Girl".
