Donald Leith McMullin, age 68 of Valdese, North Carolina passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025 at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Born in Anderson, Indiana, to Ivy Harpole and Beverly Joyce (Walker) McMullin, he entered the world alongside his beloved twin brother, Ron. Much of his childhood was spent in various states in the southeast—wherever his father happened to pastor. He briefly attended Warner Southern College, where he noted he was cordially asked to leave (the final straw was either allowing his blind roommate to drive or setting fireworks off on the president's lawn). Following college, Don moved to Valdese, North Carolina, to work at World of Apparel, a store owned by a college friend's family.
Don planted deep roots in western North Carolina. For many years he was an active member of Drexel First Church of God, where he raised his two daughters. In 2001, Don began Signature Seating, a company that manufactured seating for the furniture industry. Signature was his life's work and he was proud of the people that dedicated themselves to working alongside him. For many years his beloved dog, Jazz, would head to work with him each day, eager to get treats from the sewing department.
Don was many things to many people. Most importantly, he was an incredibly loving father, Poppi Mac, brother, uncle, great-uncle, cousin & friend. He is survived by his children, Katie (Brett) Sabol & Jennie (Austin) Prior. His legacy will continue to live on through his three grandsons: Jack, Simon, & Will. Don also leaves behind his two brothers, Ron & Arrel McMullin, sisters-in-law Rowena Fong & Cie McMullin, his daughters' mother Jean McMullin, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and an extended chosen family.
Don was welcomed into Heaven by a great cloud of witnesses including his parents Harpole and Beverly, brothers Lee & Leonard, sister-in-law Andrea, and grandchild Taylor.
Don had many dear, dear friends (so many that his daughters are afraid to forget them; please know it is not intentional). In this time of unimaginable grief, they wish to give their deepest thanks to dear friends Tim & Melissa Mull (& grandson Alek), Erica & Mike Kuchyt, Darrell Deal, Christopher Craig, Brian & Tina Thompson, and Drew & Virginia Hoyle. They also extend their heartfelt thanks to the incredible staff at 100 Main.
The story of Don's life will continue to be one of great faith, great love, and great generosity. The world will never know another smile, booming laugh, or voice like his.
His loved ones welcome you to join them in a celebration of his life on Sunday, November 30. Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m. with a service following from 3-3:30 p.m. Both events will be held at the property of Tim & Melissa Mull (4030 Sawmill Rd, Morganton). A time to simply enjoy company, celebrate his life, and honor Don's legacy will follow from 4-6 p.m. at Don's favorite hangout, 100 Main in Valdese.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to a cause that makes you think of Donnie Mac and the
fullness of his life. Examples that deeply reflect the Don’s character and values include The Wounded Warrior Project, your local congregation, fulfilling a teacher's classroom wishlist, or any organization that ensures people are fed.
Don loved to remind us: Love doesn't divide, it multiplies. We welcome you to continue multiplying the love he shared.
